About me

Breeder of Ligustica bees in Reggio Emilia

Hi, I’m Davide and I work in beekeeping, an activity that has quickly enriched and filled my days.
I raise Ligustica bees (Apis mellifera ligustica), the Italian bee known and appreciated worldwide for its productivity, reliability, and docility.
The daily challenges and constant observation of my “Ligu” allow me to grow step by step in managing and selecting the colonies.

Careful selection of productive and gentle Italian honey bees

  • The core of my work

The core of my work is the breeding and selection of Ligustica queens, alongside the production of nuclei, package bees, and honey. The choice of mother queens and colonies destined for drone rearing, whether for instrumental insemination or mountain mating in isolated areas, requires attention and method.

Through observation, I identify the families that express the most important traits for effective and sustainable beekeeping:

Productivity → families capable of ensuring consistent and regular yields.

Gentleness → calm and docile bees make the work faster and more pleasant.

Moderate swarming tendency → colonies that remain steadily productive and require less management effort.

Order in brood nest management → well-organized hives are easier to handle and better adapted to adverse environmental events.

Hygienic instinct → healthy and resilient colonies, with a natural ability to counteract the onset of diseases.

The selection work never ends: every season and every colony present specific traits that call for careful assessments and targeted technical choices. It is an activity that demands consistency and precision, because Ligustica selection is a continuous process, made of trials and observations aimed at concrete improvements year after year.

Ligustica selection: research and quality from Emilia

  • I live and work in Reggio Emilia, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, a land where the breeding of the Ligustica bee has developed. I carry on a tradition that is part of our agricultural history, combining respect for the traditional genetic type with modern criteria and tools useful for selection and reproduction. The bond with this land is fundamental: it allows me to refine my skills as a breeder and to help keep alive a practice that for generations has made Emilia-Romagna a point of reference for Italian beekeeping.
